For motorists who suffer from this life threatening habit, lets help you break this habit before you get a citation or worse, an accident. The habit of texting, reading emails and sending messages suggests the remedy lies in breaking this habit. We have seen people on the road for so long doing these activities we may accept it is as normal. But we must remember that driving involves all our faculties working in tandem. When we encumber even one faculty, we risk injury to ourselves and to others.

Here are 4 ways to break the habit of texting and driving:

1. First step is accepting that texting while driving is not only dangerous, it is against the law.
2. Second is recognize the triggers of our habit. If you are used to receiving messages while driving then it is sound judgment to turn off our phones while driving. If you’re expecting an important call then at least set your mobile to receive messages silently.
3. Third, answer calls and texts only once you have parked your car safely and away from traffic.
4. Fourth, as a society we are used to instant gratification. Instead of letting others control our time by answering a text or call, let it go until you can respond in your own time.

A good way to break a bad habit is to replace it. If your mind is used to receiving stimuli while you are driving then maybe it is worthwhile to consider listening to soothing music or inspirational messages, or even educational audio programs while you are driving. This way you can replace the void that the lack of communication will give you. It is better for us to replace a bad habit with a good one than to remove it altogether without giving our minds anything to do in the mean time. This teen was on the phone before here accident. Admittedly the new law on texting ban lacks the teeth for a proper implementation. The safest and most practical would be to ban the use of our hands other than on the steering wheel while driving.
